Col. H.H. Wells says that in the examination he gave to Samuel Cox at Bryantown the evening he was brought there about 11 o'clock pm, Cox denied all knowledge of either of the two persons named being or having been at his house; and on being told by Col. Wells that he could make a statement if he pleased, but if he did make one, it must be true, & that if he made a false one the Colonel would tie him up by his thumbs, he asked for time for reflection. The Colonel told him he could have until 4 o'clock the next morning to reflect. At 4 o'clock in the morning he was brought in by the guard and said he desired to talk with the Colonel, & the first expression he made use of was that it was no use concealing the fact that the two men were at his house, but that he did not know who they were.
